“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine” (Prov. 3:9-10 KJV).
When you are giving unto God you are glorifying God. God gives us two instructions. Honor him with our substance (that is offerings) and with our first fruits (our tithes).
Then notice He gives us the promise of abundance in verse ten, “So shall thy barns be filled with plenty and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”
I like those two words – burst out! Your presses will burst out with new wine. The scripture says that your barns will be filled with plenty. Now most of us don’t have barns today. The twenty-first century equivalent to barns would be bank accounts.
If you really just want to translate it as clearly as you could it would simple mean your “storage places.” In Israel, back then, they bartered to get goods and services. Therefore they had to have a place to keep the things with which they used to barter.
Their storage places were their barns. And this scripture says, Listen, your storage places (bank accounts) will be filled with plenty – they would have plenty to barter with. We would have plenty to spend.
On the contrary, it didn’t say your pockets would be filled with air, because you have given unto God. He says your bank accounts, will be filled with plenty. If your storage places are filled with plenty, then your house and your pockets must be filled with plenty.
I have no need to store something when I don’t even have anything in my pocket. If I don’t have a couch, I use the money I have and get the couch. But God is saying here that if you give to Him out of your substance and the first fruits of your increase, your pockets will be filled with plenty.
Your home will be filled with all good things as the Bible says in Deuteronomy 6, and your bank accounts will be filled with plenty. That is enough to shout right there.
God has promised His children abundance. Our part is to get in on His plan, do things the way the Bible says to do them, and ignore the way the world says to do them. The world wants to hoard up and keep everything for themselves. But God way to abundance is to give as He directs us to give.
When we do as He says, surely we will have plenty to enjoy and to keep on giving to bless others. It is God’s way. It is abundant life.
